Recently a client of mine spoke to a friend of his whose business wasn’t doing great. In fact, that friend was actively looking for ways to grow their business. My client recommended hiring me. He didn’t mention price or any details, just a general, talk to Timon if you want to grow your business.

The friend’s first response was: “That’s going to cost me money.” The friend didn’t know the investment mind you! People that respond like that show a mindset of staying small, not willing to invest in themselves or their business. How likely are those people to be successful, do you think?

There are more “reasons” why self-employed people don’t hire help. Are you guilty of any of these “reasons” for not hiring?

Reason 1: I can’t afford it

I can’t afford it. I don’t have the money, it’s so expensive or some variation on that.

Recently I hired an international Virtual Assistant for $10,- an hour. And there were cheaper options available. Would you be working for $10,- an hour? If the answer is no, then you should hire such a Virtual Assistant. If the answer is yes, then you need to grow your business.

Leave a comment below and I’ll send you the details of how I did it.

But even when hiring people that charge more, you need to realize three things:
1. Hiring is passive income. They work on earning you money, how cool is that?
2. It saves you tons of time. Meaning you can focus on growing your business or enjoying your newfound lifestyle.
3. Hiring people is an investment in your business and will earn itself back many times.

Reason 2: Delegating is a pain in the ass

If you hire the cheapest people you can find, then yes, delegating is a pain in the ass. You need to find motivated people. These people will love working for you. This is one reason I like hiring self-employed people so much, as they are typically highly motivated to do a good job. Because they know that if they don’t do a good job you will stop hiring them and hire someone else.

A good test to see if someone is motivated is how much trouble they take to get hired in the first place. If they are late at pre-hiring meetings, don’t respond well or correctly to e-mails, don’t follow up on proposals, those are all red flags of an unmotivated person. If they don’t bother the effort to get hired, how much effort will they put in after you hire them?

Reason 3: If you want to have it done right, do it yourself.

This saying is so ingrained that it is repeated automatically, without giving it a second thought. But of course, it is utter bullsh*t.

Are you really the best graphic design around? The best website builder? The best copywriter? The best bookkeeper? The best marketeer? All of that? Of course not.

You need to outsource those tasks which you aren’t good at and find someone who is passionate about that area and therefore much better at it. A good expert in an area can do things better and quicker than you can. It is his expertise, make use of that.

These are the Top 3 Reasons Not To Outsource. I believe that you need to outsource if you want to be successful in your business. We can’t do everything by ourselves! By hiring help the right way our own lives improve drastically.

What other “reason” for not hiring do you know of? Let me know in the comments below.

See you around.

All the best,
Timon Vinke
